Questions and answers on the global jobs crisis
More than 4,000 delegates representing governments, employers and workers are meeting at the annual Conference of the ILO from 3 to 19 June to discuss ways of addressing the global crisis in jobs and social protection. ILO Online asked Raymond Torres, Director of the ILO International Institute for Labour Studies about the current jobs situation, and how decent work policies can tackle the crisis.Click here
 
To promote social dialogue
in widened Europe was the main subject of the conference organized with DG Employment, Social Affairs in Ljubljana in January, 2004.
Social dialogue - negotiations and discussions among the social partners and the organisations of employers and trade-union - plays an essential role in the European society. It is in the heart of European economic and social model, because it allows to progress at the same time on the economic and social foreheads. It can play a key role by helping the EU to reach the objective, fixed in Lisbon, to become the most competitive world economy as for 2010, according to the European Commission.

It is a tool of consultation and negotiation, recognized as an essential dimension of the European model, social dialogue appears as one of the foundations of the democracy. That is why the European Union gradually established new rules and new mechanisms called to strengthen the role of the actors who participate daily in the economic and social evolution of its member countries.
